Overwatch is a 6v6 hero shooter released by Blizzard (also developed Warcraft, Starcraft, and Hearthstone) in 2016. The first-person shooter had immediate success and has now established itself as one of the premier e-sports in the world.
Overwatch has over 7 million active monthly players and is particularly popular in North America, South Korea, and China. Overwatch e-sports is mostly centered around the Overwatch League. The Overwatch League was created in 2016 and features 20 Overwatch e-sports teams spread across the US, Canada, UK, France, South Korea, and China.
The teams represent different cities just like a traditional sports league, and compete against each other in a regular season and then a playoff series. All of the Overwatch top players compete in this league.
The 2021 playoff series Overwatch tournament had a prize pool of over $3 million! Teams are constantly updating their roster by trading and transferring players. With so much money on the line, teams use OW transfers to boost their squad’s skill and chemistry in hopes of winning the league.
